Hitra’s history begins with the first foreigners who arrived here across the ice from different parts of Europe over 10 000 years ago. There are traces of people’s settlements on Hitra originating in the Stone Age, the Bronze Age and the Iron Age. Since then, the island has been continuously inhabited.
